Seminar Title: ON-SITE WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND YOUR COTTAGE

Speaker : Jamie Saunders
Education and/or Professional Credentials: BSc. (Eng.) - Environmental

BIO: After focusing on on-site wastewater in University Jamie has since developed his skills in the pulp and paper and consulting industry of northwestern ontario. Since 2004 he's been a septic inspector for the Ottawa Septic System Office and now runs the Tay Valley Septic Office and co-ordinates re-inspection programs for Tay Valley, North Frontenac and Rideau Lakes Township. Jamie also facilitates several courses a year through the Ontario Rural Wastewater Centre.

Session Outline: The session will provide a basic overview of many different on-site wastewater treatment system components, provide some basic operation and maintenance techniques and go over common concerns with cottage septic systems. Advances in on-site wastewater treatment technologies and their relevance to the cottage industry will also be discussed.

Session Outline: How to choose the right Life Jacket and Making sure you wear it! – Boating is the number one cause of drowning in Canada. In 2000, about one-third of all water-related deaths occurred when boating. This year, the number of boaters in Canada will reach over 10 Million people, making Boating and Water Safety all that more important. Eighty-five per cent of the boating deaths in 2000 had one common factor — the victim was not wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) or life-jacket. *Canada Safety Council & Lifesaving Society Pleasure Craft Operator Card – Who needs it, When is it required, and How do I get it!

Seminar Title: TONGUE IN THE DARK

Speaker: Shaun Funk / Redhead Pantry

BIO: Shaun Funk is a senior officer in the Canadian Forces, having been a member for over 20 years. He returned from Afghanistan last year after serving an eight month tour with the United States, where he was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal. He is a Dashing Young Cavalry Officer (DYCO) and while others would call him a Tanker or Zipper head he also owns his own catering company and premium condiment company called Redhead Pantry.

Session Outline: Discuss the four main flavours that every tongue detects using food examples. Shaun will challenge everyone to describe where chili/heat fits into the tongue map. He'll discuss different herbs and spices to add to meal's other than salt and pepper that will make them taste better and full of flavour. Shaun will discuss local vs. global purchasing and the implications to local farmers and manufacturers along with health issues and the exercise choices that must be made everyday for health fulfillment.
